Dedicated film scanners are dying out and likely to get more expensive
before they disappear completely from the shops.

I have a "Plustek" scanner which I bought in about 2002, then it cost me
$490 but now in 2008 the shop no longer stocks scanners.

Not film scanners, which is what that model is.  Not much I think is 
worth considering under $500 new.
