The only thing I can think of is either the contacts or the battery.
If the battery is freshly charged thenit may not be holding a good charge.
The firmware up must be done with a full battery or with AC hooked up. I am just thinking that the
camera thinks the battery is dead. I had that issue w/ my 10d and a firmware upagrade fixed it. 
Call Canon and see what they say.
