HDR or High Dynamic Range in a nutshell is bascially just combining the best of several photos.  It does with software what the eye does naturally because no camera or sensor or any combination of film sensor, software or anything else has ever come close to the ability of the human eye.

Photoshop CS2 has an HDR feature in it and another poster mentioned the open source software.  There is great potential for many subjects, especially some landscapes, but it can often lead to flat lighting too.  Have fun and enjoy experimenting.
