V were for - fascinating that V is for Victor (Hasselblad)!

Well, not quite....

These shutters were of German manufacture (Compur), and V stands for "Vorlauf". And that indeed means "self-timer".

M and X were the usual flash setting designations (with or without pre- igniting); don´t know exactly what words they were acronyms for.
