It could just be a slightly broken connection. In the old days you could have a pc cord that worked sporratically.  When the cord was loose it worked when the cord was pulled straight out and tight it didn't.

I had a similar problem, instead, with an old mouse: It double-clicked
when I clicked only once. I thought it was a case of telekinesis
