Nothing of the sort... It's done in Photoshop by placing the image as a strip into a square formatted image space and then using the Polar Coordinates filter in Photoshop to give the round appearance. Popular Photography & Imaging did a how-to article a few months back and I'd bet they now have it on their web site. http://www.popphoto/com is the homepage. You may need to dearch. I think Debbie Grossman wrote the article.
