Well it is possible to get your images into an iPod Photo, I believe with your card reader, without going through a computer.

And there is the Epson P 2000 or P 4000 which has a pretty good reputation for durability and user friendliness compared to the Archos line of viewers.

It seems like this link to the eBay page with some Epson P-2000s is unwilling to remain together. You'll probably have to cut and paste.
