A lot of you pointed out that Doc Watson wasn't sharp in my last week submission to the gallery. After ruling out camera motion, subject motion and examining the original scanned file which shows some grain on extreme enlargement I have come to the conclusion that the UV filter on the lens was dirty enough to degrade the image sharpness. Kodak showed this degradation effect of a dirty lens verses a  clean lens in a darkroom book many years ago.
