I apologize for being a lurker who only comes into the light on a way o.t. subject like this, but I think you would find that there were many more internships available if interns were not forced to work 36 hour+ shifts. I can't understand why this antiquated and ultimately dangerous practice is still maintained.

Internships, etc. are limited by the number of teaching hospital beds and by the willingness of patients at those institutions to be treated by inexperienced physicians.
