Emily, I tried it out and it seemed to work properly, though it isn't the most elegant of interfaces. I suppose it depends on your target market, which in this case I would assume would be participants in the depicted race, and for that purpose it's fine.
One problem, as is obvious from the replies you've had so far, is providing the proper link to direct people to your photos. Surely there's something simpler than than these long URLs. Perhaps have people go to your regular Website and provide a link from there.
