I have used Coolscan IV for years but I save my scans as TIFF files. I've never tried to save then as NEF files and don't see any reason to do so. CS2 has no problem opening TIFF's. That includes Picture Project and there's no problem editing the layers as long as you don't have the Flatten All Layers box checked.

They can be read in PictureProject, but PictureProject can't edit them.
