Marilyn, You have the Canon 5D, correct? You'll need an electronic cable release for it. Two from Canon are the Canon Remote Switch RS-80N3 or the Timer Remote Controller TC-80N3. The former is a simple switch which replicates the shutter button functions at the end of a 2.5 foot wire. The latter is a more sophisticated device which allows you to do a number of additional things with a wired remote for a few more dollars. I've made do with the simpler one but often wish I had sprung for the one with greater functionality. If cost is an object there are also plans to be found online for making your own. The problem with these is finding the right connector for plugging into the camera. Either of them will allow you to not only trigger the shutter with a cable, but also the mirror lock-up if you activate that feature in your custom functions. You'll have to remember that the first press of the shutter button will flip up the mirror and a subsequent click of the shutter button will actually trip the shutter itself. I tend to forget this sometimes and then wonder why I never made an exposure. ;-) In some ways it ticks me off that I can't use a conventional mechanical cable release which can be had for only a few bucks, but the electronic ones have worked well for me so far. Mechanical releases introduce the possibility of shake and movement so the electronic ones probably do a better job of eliminating that. There are also wireless remotes which use the same connection as the wired ones so there is a great deal of flexibility there, too. Cheers, Rich Mason On Apr 25, 2006, at 1:43 PM, Marilyn wrote:
