I don't think that you should underestimate your capacity to get a fairly
good tonal range with paper negatives, if you move to very very large format
pinhole (room-size cameras where you can actually do extensive in-camera
dodging/burning-in).
But with my 20x24 pinhole box, I rely on using a yellow filter to reduce the
contrast (at the cost of up to 1-stop increase in exposure time). It gives
me good results. I normally keep the paper negative as the final art-work.
