Would you join a contest where your entry will be owned by the organizer, whether you win or not? Would this act not be the same as collecting stock photos for free?

Yup. They've been doing it ever since they lost the copyright fight with the US Supreme Court.

And everyone else does it too.

After all, paying an intern 25K a year to wade through all those submissions of junk is cheaper than paying a real photographer to shoot a story.
