Does Camera Lens Resolution depend on Objective Lens Diameter?

Hi all!

I was reading an article in American Rifleman of Sept 05 on optics resolution. (How Sharp is Sharp?) and there is the statement that Resolution depends on Objective Lens Diameter, and by a function of:

114.3 / Objective Lens Diameter = Resolution in arc seconds (1/60th of a MOA)

Which is stated that it is a simplified formula for Dawes? Limit????

So a 58mm lens has a resolution of 113.3 / 58 = 2 Seconds of Angle (SOA) ( 1 arc degree = 1 MOA = 60 SOA).

Well I know it is more complicated than this, with lens design and coatings getting into the issue... On the other hand high quality long zoom lenses are always BIG (read sporting a large diameter objecyive)

So....how critical is obj lens diameter on resolution. Amd BTW does a larger objectve makes that much difference in light collection?

thanks, kostas
