Someday designers will figure out how to make a friction grab on the
tripod legs so that one can pull or push each leg to the desired
position and it just stays.
The Manfrotto 058 tripod

has a clever mechanism at the top of the legs, where pressing a lever
sideways frees up the legs so they can be extended (or shortened) all
at once, and releasing the lever locks the extension of all the legs.
It is a fairly heavy tripod though, at over 6kg.
