Someday designers will figure out how to make a friction grab on the tripod legs so that one can pull or push each leg to the desired position and it just stays. Maybe with some sort of little release button up at the platform and a little flat flaring right at the end of each leg so you can put your foot on it and pull while pressing the button.

Then the center post will no longer be necessary and we can all carry around tripods that extend to 9 feet and get rid of the center post entirely.

Galen Rowell used his tripods without the center post with the Arca Swiss mounted directly on the base of the tripod.
