Actually, Emily . . . you lay it on its side. The problem that can be overcome with practice is to not allow the sharp edge of the mylar to cut into the emulsion or the actual paper. Some refer to it as the edge of the negative. Real cutting edge stuff.

Which way does the negative go when you do platinum printing? You don't actually lay the plate emulsion-side down on the paper, do you? Surely you lay it down with the emulsion side not touching the platinum covered paper?
