Hi Joseph,

I have been following your posts re: the body and lenses. What is your goal photographically?
If you want a do-it-all lens regardless if it's an "L" or not you will suffer some image degradation. Stay away from using the 2x configureation with a zoom. the results suck. Even stopped down, you still get softness and a lower contrast level in the image. I have the 70-200 2.8 w/ a 2x that worked Ok w/ film but the magnifaction that comes with the smaller chip increased everything including flaws.

The 70/200 2.8 w/ your camera is almost = 300 2.8. A 300 5.6 zoom will not be as sharp, but will be closer by 20mm or so. So if you can shoot sharp with 200 and get a little closer you are OK or pehaps you can stop down some, and crop to get the look you want.

But, the real answer always will be to have the best lenses you can afford. Get the lower body and put your cash in glass is how I usually teach. The bodies will change much faster long term but the lenses are a constant.

Les
