The statement below is pretty much where my question came from. I was using file share till that site shut down. Most of the music I got I'd bought a long time ago. The vinyl is gone now and the music is so old that unless Time-Life comes out with a box set, you can't find it anymore. I haven't heard of any recording companies or artists going bankrupt (yet) because of file share. 
I'd never want my works taken and sold for profit by the thief. But it's my understanding that file share wasn't set up for that. Thieves will always find a way. They did before file share and will continue long after file share goes away. 
As for protecting our pictures on our web pages, there will always be some new program for that and someone will figure a way to get around it.
