may soon - we would see what gets through by being aligned with the seond
polarizer however it is turned.

Wouldn´t that happen if, say, blue was rotated more than 90 degrees and red less than 90 degrees? (90 + a and 90 - a to be more specific). Then their components parallell to the second polarizer would still be the same. AFAIK, rotations greater than 90 degrees is quite possible if the birefringent sheet is thick enough.
