Actually I believe Lightning comes from the clouds down but at the same time
the earth sends out little feelers of electricity which connect to the
lightning, if that makes sense, there was an incidence where a person on a
bike who was crossing a city park on a sunny day was hit by lightning, when
they checked to find out where the strike originated it was several miles
away, so there is no rime or reason as to who or what is going to get hit,
things just have to be right.

Yes, this image is very interesting.
My guess that the reason for the two flashes is that lightning, I believe,
moves from the ground to the clouds. In this case, maybe it was just
happenstance that the aircraft was in the wrong place at the wrong time...
