I'm not at all expert on these things but not much has been said.
As far as I know, there is what is called a "return stroke".
Lightning goes from cloud to ground and then the superheated air
furnishes a conduit for a stroke to go back to the cloud. I have no
ideas why the return stroke appears to be much stronger than the
original. But this all may be wrong anyway.
