Tim,
Time is money but you have to go with your heart.
I suggest  that you figure out how many hours work is involved and then decide for yourself what your time is worth.
 
You can't take commercial rates as a yardstick.
I charge $1500 a day for general, below the line, commercial work. But I am often shooting for nothing for friends or family. Kids portraits and stuff like that. If an art director who gives me a lot of work  says that he needs a favour, I will shoot within his budget even if it's $100.
 
The best way to make money on the kind of thing you are shooting is to sell the prints at a good price. All the parents will buy pics for the extended family and I'm sure you can buy a new D70 with the money you'll make out of print orders. (BTW, Do you think the Nikon D70 is a better camera than the Canon digital rebel?)
