The problem is Photoshop manages its own memory outside of Windoze or
Mac system. That's why you have to tell it how much to use. Then the
scanner software uses the system memory, and maybe not that much left.
Most scanner software does have settings for where on disc to write
it's file and cache size, etc.

So with a mega scan, scanning outside Photoshop is the best way. But
most scanning is best done in Photoshop.

Remember too that Windoze or Mac system does use up resources that
aren't always reset or flushed. I would recommend a fresh boot before
a mega scan. Since the scan likely will take a long time, a reboot of
a half a minute is not unreasonable to ensure the scan doesn't need to
be redone.

Lots of factors to consider when pushing the limits. One might want to
setup the system or program to allocate more resources, and avoid
multi tasking while the scanning is going on too.
