Thats fine if you don't need to be able to open the file later and revert back to an earlier state since snapshots are deleted when you save the file.

On the other hand layers and masks are saved with the file. Copy the layer you want to manipulate to a new layer, run the filter then add a mask and paint away the filter effect where you don't want it. You can use any brush, gradient etc on the mask. You can even apply filters to the mask. Later when you get divorced, go back into the file and paint over the mask where the ex-spouse is standing and reprint the photo.

One way to do it is to create a snapshot before using the filter and another 
after the filter.
