using history instead of masks

One way to do it is to create a snapshot before using the filter and another 
after the filter. Then use the history tool to paint in from the 
snapshots. This also allows you to use opacity in the tool option and paint 
more or less of what you want. Select each snapshot as required by 
checking the "History tool box" (Or whatever that box is called)
Of course all selections etc aply so it's a very effective method.
