I'm not sure I understand your point?

They have expensive kit and take good photos?
Well, their motivation to take good photos comes from the love of
thier toys maybe for sure.
And maybe with a cheap camera they would not feel empowered to take
any photos.

But how is this inconsitent with the idea that having learned to take
good shots with thier top of the range DSLRs, they could buy a compact
and discover the shots were all but as good?
