You should use the speedlight or X setting

exactly 

If in doubt take the lens off and place a piece of white paper in the focal
plane of the camera and holding the flash close to the camera and pointing the
camera at the flash look at the paper from the back of the camera. If you see a
full rectangular shape show up then all is well. If only a partial focal frame
is seen then either you are using too short an exposure time or the wrong sync
setting - but I'd say the former. Incorrect sync setting will most probably
result in blank frames!
