In need of advice

I'm currently a social studies teacher who has the wonderful opportunity to include two sections of photography in my schedule (I actually built the school's program from scratch).  Since, my passion for producing images has grown tremendously, almost to the point that I'm more interested in photography than social studies sometimes.  I'm interested in further investigating photography as a career option (although, after an afternoon of shooting with cris bouroncle, i'm not so sure i have the nerves to dodge bombs in a war zone).

My interests:  I'm interested in finding freelance work during the summer so as to feel out different possibilities.  I'm very interested in historical sites, natural geological anomalies, and landscapes.  Although I'm no where near ready to quit my day job, I'd like to possibly feel out several bodies of water.  I'd like to know how to get the proverbial foot in the door.  For instance, what makes a good portfolio?

Givens:
I feel I have the ability to communicate objectives with a potential client to produce wanted and alternative perspectives as well;
I have access to quality professional services where ever I happen to be staying (primarily egypt, north carolina, and michigan/chicago);
some of our English friends may differ in opinion, but I feel I can write well too;
I find myself receiving consitently postitive criticism from my peers (if not only from social courtesy or relative lack of interest)...although I must thank the PF for calling me on garbage when I produce it;
I want to have this option.

I'm hoping some of you have some advice for a newbie like myself.  I have no formal training whatsoever.  I'm not a web designer or graphic artist by any stretch of the imagination.  I'm content by myself.  I'm willing to spend money for reasonable investment (being a teacher gives me a limit on that though).

What about approaching galleries?

Thanks in advance...Trevor Cunningham
