In addition the fact that screens can be set at a wide variety of resolutions, the inherent dpi of a screen, which is not important other than fonts, can be anywhere from 72 to around 120. Some of the TabletPC products that were around a few years ago had native resolutions of 122. However, what screens display are pixels, not inches, so the constant use of 72dpi is a waste of energy. An image that is 640x480 will display the same whether the dpi are set at 1 or 1 million.
