Re: Online self publishing

We have an Apple store very near my home and they have sample iBooks out on display. While I believe they are nice and would make a great memento of a trip or event, I don't think they are of the quality you would want for selling. The pages are glossy and the printing looks too 'laserish' for my taste.

I greatly appreciate the comments received so far. :-)

A friend of mine suggested I look into Apple's iPhoto (I think
mypublishers.com does the printing for Apple). I had two comments on
iPhoto on another list, one very positive, and one very negative. Has
anyone here tried iPhoto for printing books?

Dan,

I hate to say it but, you ain't going to find good on-demand printing.
Double hit, B/W is very expensive. A friend pays about $3.00 ea. for a
one-page brochure advertising his edition of prints. What about an
edition of ink-jet prints in a slip-case? I and my friends have
explored home-made art book printing quite a lot and not found an easy
solution. My Lookaround book is laserjet printed, 8-1/2 x 11 with six,
11 x 17 B/W ink jet fold outs. I put about $5.00 ea. into materials
including padded shipping envelope. I have also tipped (glued in)
prints into blank, bound books and wire-bound artist sketch books.
The latter is the most workable.

Yes, I do want to print photos, mainly black and white duotone quality.
In my mind I'm looking for something of the quality of the illustrations in
the magazine "Lenswork". Perhaps I'm setting my sights to high, but that
is what I'm looking for. I wish to prepare an "art photo" book; simple
layout, mainly photos but with some text accompanying each photo.

Ideally these books would be offered for sale from a website, so a low
price isn't necessarily required, as long as the printing and paper quality
is high. On demand printing would be ideal to keep my costs down.
