Hi Bob,

You aren't ignorant at all.  "Strip mall," may be a southern California
phrase that isn't used in other areas of our country.

A strip mall is a single row of businesses, usually on a corner of an
intersection.   Malls cover a much larger area and contain many more
businesses and several "anchor" businesses like Sears and Dillards.

A strip mall is different from a row of  free standing stores and businesses
because the businesses are housed in one large complex-like setting and
strip mall stores share a common parking lot.

Usually strip malls sit on corners every few blocks.  I hope this helps.
