I wouldn't be surprised. Wanting to go to Mars doesn't strike me as
something most conservatives would be interested in (wasteful government
spending) unless the government is doing it for them so they don't have to
pay for it, just like this little boondoggle in Afghanistan (southbound
Caspian oil pipeline that cannot go through Iran), and Irak (second-largest
known reserves).

Did you know that, in the late 1990s, US oil companies (Halliburton
included) hired a negotiator to make a deal with the Taliban government to
allow the pipeline to go through Afghanistan, and that said negotiator was
none other than Hamid Karsai, current President of Afghanistan? When de deal
didn't go through, well, the rest is history I guess.
