easy way to choose shutter speed for panning?

Hi,

I'm trying to remember how to use a film camera after being chained to the studio for the past year, shooting digital. So far it's been fun (well, i've only shot two rolls), and i've finally managed to break the habit of looking at the post-view (which in my film cameras don't exist).

QUESTION: Say i want to shoot moving subjects, I realise the amount of background blur will depend on the subject movement, distance from the camera, focal length used, etc, but is there a nice rule of thumb to work out an optimal shutter speed?

It's been a gorgeous Christmas Day in Sydney; Merry Christmas & a Very Happy New Year to you all...

Best regards,
Deen
