BB - I may be going out on a limb here, but I personally would probably go
with the Mamiya 645 AFD for an auto focus MF camera. I admit I haven't
tested the new Hassie - so that could be better (since my only complaint
with H's in the past was the square format made in-camera composition
frustrating for me when I later had to try to "crop" my image into a 6x7
ratio for portfolio prints). But anyway, I'll stick to what I DO know: the
AF on the Mamiya is pretty quick and accurate - even though I always opt for
manual myself (call me old-school). But it's a happy medium in that it has
all the interchangeable backs (unlike the Pentax) and is still relatively
light and easy to hand-hold. The other big plus for me is that if I were
considering buying, the AFD accepts digital backs; I'm not sure how the
others are in this area but it's definetly something to consider as digital
technology improves - who knows, five years down the line you could be
kicking yourself for investing in a setup that isn't fully compatible with
digital backs and you have to sacrifice certain camera functions, etc in
order to use this 100MB capture back that's only $2000! (Who knows...maybe
I'm dreaming - but it seems like that could be a reality someday!) Anyway,
if the Hassie is out of your price range and the Pentax is too limited then
the Mamiya could be a good middle-road buy. Just my thoughts on it.
