  Thank you, Alan. If people start with something they're passionate about, the rest will follow, and with history, as with everything, anything looked at long enough becomes everything.

    Most people are not aware that most museums have community outreach programs which will allow mere mortals the opportunity to see (and sometimes handle) original prints by the Masters. You may have to put together a group for some institutions, others will show from their collections even to individuals. Most curators/directors complain that "no one ever takes advantage of this"....but then, they don't exactly advertise the fact, either. I would strongly advise anyone thinking about doing this to conduct some research on their own BEFORE tying up some else's time, and to (without being pyshy) attempt to build a relationship with the institution.

The Atlantic article should be required reading for all PFers.  BTW, I  agree with your advise that anyone interested in photographic art history  should start where ever they fancy.  They should begin by having a look at  and even handling actual prints in a museum collection.
