Perhaps it seems that way, but  I was not addressing the suggestions, I know they are well-meant and part of the natural process on PF (and the web in general).

 I was advising the readers of these suggestions to follow their own path of interest as to where to start, which is why I made no specific recommendations. If someone has specific interests, please e-mail me off-list and I will be happy to make specific suggestions. 

 Emphasizing firsts is, IMO, largely a waste of time (other than as signposts). This is a long, interconnected web of human striving.
  
   If one is totally clueless, these suggestions are as good as any. I believe in one of my replies I did agree with a respondent that Rosenblum's History was a good overview.

 It should also be said that for many, it would take much less time to get in one's car or board public transport and go to the local library/bookstore than it would to spend time on the web searching (as per Bob's remarks) Thanks for your comments.
