Having skimmed through this thread I'm surprised no one has mentioned 
Time magazines infamous doctoring of O.J. Simpson's mug shot for its 
cover,  or more germanely, The New Republic's (IIRC) shortening of 
Saddam's moustache to make him look more like Hitler, some years back. 
The reason those folks didn't get fired was, a) their editors were in 
on the con, and b) the "right" people were getting maligned in those 
cases, unlike here.
