I vaguely remember reading something like what you described, but I am not
sure if it was talking about the auto focus or some other lens function.

When dealing with Canon lenses, the difference in pro and consumer AF
functioning has to do with the type of USM (UltraSonic Motor) in the lens.
The pro model uses ring-type USM, while the less expensive AF lenses use a
micro USM. You can read more at
