People learn calls to attract target animals, whether to track,
photograph or hunt. Why not baiting? It's still wild although not
doing something it would do in the wild, because the natural bait
would not be alive. But that's not quite all that much of a problem
either. Substitute natural prey for the piece of fat. It'll take
more time, you'll be in the blind more, and you may have to catch the
prey first but you'll have the same opportunity to get the shot as
with dead prey.
How cold is it up there right now? Can you spend time in the blind
waiting for a series of better opportunites? Can you spend time
there studying the behavior of the bird enough to get some
predictability out of it? Will the bird become more present and
active when the salmon start to run? Could you hold out for your
opportunity until that season and pass on this dead bait concept?
