Historical note. The pyramids in Mexico and Guatemala were almost always brightly painted. The bright colors were very important for a number of reasons. Very few of the remaining structures show the paint, but this is because of the years of environmental wear. There are sometimes small indications of paint, especially red paint on the outside of pyramids, but most of the evidence of painting comes from the building over of pyramids that was very common (one pyramid built on top of another.) The bright paint found in the area today comes from the pre-hispanic cultures that built the pyramids.
