One tip I can add in terms of clothing. If you stand around, then it is
advisable to dress as if the temperatures are 30 degrees colder than
expected. I do astrophotography and where warm clothing using the layering
technique. As I move around, I can remove things to help with the balance of
ambient temps and body temps.

If the weather is wet, the layering helps to ward off that damp penetrating
cold. Gortex will only get you so far when wet snow is your challenge. A
light rain jacket over the Gortex will keep you dry for very long periods of
time and you can "layer down" as the need arises.
