For lightning the stroke will be over before the light activated shutter has time to fire, however the stroke is preceded by minor discharges that may be detected by radio. A better lightning stroke activation would therefore be a short wave radio with an output from the detector (or an electronic Schmitt trigger on the sound output). Use this to fire the shutter. It used a conventional sound decibel meter from Radio Shack and a relay to trigger the camera. If a camera has a port for a wired remote shutter release device, then a specialized remote wired device activated by lightning for example would trigger the shutter.
