RE: shutter release

For lightning the stroke will be over before the light activated shutter has
time to fire, however the stroke is preceded by minor discharges that may be
detected by radio.

A better lightning stroke activation would therefore be a short wave radio
with an output from the detector (or an electronic Schmitt trigger on the
sound output). Use this to fire the shutter.

Richard,
I used a device activated by sound to trigger a remote camera at Cape
Canaveral to photograph Space Shuttle launches. It used a conventional
sound decibel meter from Radio Shack and a relay to trigger the camera.
For lightning, I would check out:

If a camera has a port for a wired remote shutter release device, then a
specialized remote wired device activated by lightning for example would
trigger the shutter.
