Plastic degrades. What if it gets too brittle and the CD blows up at high RPM's. Or label adhesive and inks weaken it unevenly? I'm only guessing but I think commercial CD labels are very thin decals most likely applied with heat or water-base glue. Some people write only on the inner ring nearest the spindle.
