Andy, 


That question was first posed because photography could replicate nature
with astounding accuracy. And, to a painters point of view, with
vitually no effort or exhibition of talent. That seemed to tick off the
painters on one hand although in the end it freed them from the burden
of realism.

Of course it put the wedding and portrait guys right out of business.
(Were there wedding painters?)

Perhaps you could start with that?
