It was described as 2 linked circles, which incidentally is different to the way we use it now. Without resorting to my greek alphabet, I think it's like a lowercase omega? Since the Romans also had the perfectly servicable M, John Wallis suggested it's use to mean infinity. (And M is so much easier for films) Clearly infinity today is a bigger number than it was then :-) Steve
