Well you can get a 100-speed consumer color film that does well with long
exposures (Fuji Superia should do it), set your camera on manual or
bulb with f4/5.6 and exposure times anywhere from 8 to 30 seconds. The
range from 8-15 seconds should be good. IMHO the wider you open the
lens, more smoke you'll get - but that's just my feeling.
There's no metering involved here, unless you want for example to have
a properly exposed background or something - but since it will be
pretty dark at the time of shooting you'll need a good meter capable
of metering those low light levels.
