I went on a backpacking trip to Olympic National Park (on the other side of the USA) with a friend and we left two rain jackets on a trail some eight miles from anywhere. Rather than hike back in search of them we left word of their loss (along with name and address) at a ranger station hoping someone might find them and turn them in. Sure enough, some two weeks later the jackets arrived in the mail, none the worse for their adventure. It may be less likely to locate the owner of a roll of film, but who knows? That roll might contain someone's record of a once-in-a-lifetime journey. Your friend could at least put a "found" advertisement in the newspaper. I would save processing the film until other attempts were made.
