Russ,

It's been my experience with plastic reels (or anything plastic rubbing
against plastic ) that the plastic wears and works poorly. Another example
is the plastic in cassette tapes. When you used them extensively, they begin
to bind and eventually break. Now I've not used plastic reels that much, but
I think your solution is ... new reels.  I could be wrong.
